不加思索用音譯方法來為寒舍命中文名，我覺得是毫無誠意的，也會破壞本 網頁的形象，因此我只好暫時讓英文名支撐起這個「家」吧。要令寒舍的中文名改得像「Oxford」的「牛津」及「Coca-Cola」的「可口可樂」實在 有點難度，但我會努力去做到的，希望剛開始的翻譯課程能給我力量及靈感。

情懷
「現在很少像你那個年紀的人有這種情懷了！」什麼情懷？寫Blog的情懷也！
這句話令我心十分歡喜及自豪。稱讚我的是一位看過這網頁的友人(一位美女)。想不到在網海漂流的小舟也能遇到知音，這種心情並非歡喜自豪二詞所能解釋。
說起來有點汗顏，這小舟已有個多月沒有划過，是因為近來那種組織自己思想的動力不太足夠，想到一半就打消按鍵盤的念頭了。但得到友人的讚美，力量好像重新注入我的思想。謝謝您，I.P.。我會繼續前進！

Où est le paradis?
What's your requirement of a library? Rich variety of books, spacious reading area and comfortable environment. Yes, these are the basic requirements but hardly to be achieved in HK.
Basically, the Central Library in HK Island can reach the standard just mentioned. Except those "members only" libraries in colleges and clubs, the Central Library seems the only "paradise" for library-surfing (and other district libraries run by the government can't compare). This becomes a attractive place for most readers and students.
The problem comes. There is shortage of seats for readers in most areas. Exploring more spaces for seats? Sorry, I found that the library building has been run out of space and some seats will be sacrified for extra-bookshelves.
Reference books area, a 3-story section of most kinds of books (You may discover some rare treasures that hardly appeared in the lending sections!) is the core of the paradise. The only regulation is you can't take the book away from this section. I agree with this regulation because the book there can be always available. A by-product also created by this regulation - the special reading areas, for reference-book readers only. This is reasonable and fair for those readers. However, when I read the newly updated rules of the special reading areas, I believe some officiers do wrong thing sincerely (There's good phrase in Chinese - 好心做壞事). Let's have a look of the first statement of the rules:
Although this rule is no harm for me, a notebook user, who that can bring thousands of virtual books, study notes & exam papers, I think the function of this special reading area has been damaged or "twisted". Actually, this so-called-rule can't prohabit someone misuse the facilities , as someone can pretend reading the referrence books but doing other unrelated things .....
In a society of freedom of speech, freedom of acquiring/exploring knowledge should also be included. It's a bit ironic that can't be done in library! Such scene I met in this library shows the the lack of library facilities and most importantly, and sight of objective for running a library.
In terms of the Rules of theuse of "Special Reading Area", I should feel guilty of writing this passage in this area, because my eyes should stare at reference books of software-testing, but I have to make some noise of this flaw, or this final paradise will be vanished!

MSF Orienteering Competition 2005
This is my 3rd year to take part of the MSF Orienteering Competition. Different from the game participants, being a crew member isn't playful. Managing the affairs of more than 2000 people is challenging but the great people and experience let us get it through. Though I'm not qualified to be a MSF volunteer in Africa (at this moment), this event gave me at leat 0.1% feeling of actual humanitarian missions.
From registration to prize presentation, no task is kidding. This year, I was repsonsible of the baggage storages. As all participants can only carry competition-related materails (e.g. compass, map, water) during the game, other belongings has to be left in the baggages counter. The baggages area wasn't luxury but just a defined sandy field. Each team (may consist of 1 to 4 people) can allocated a "slot" to store their baggages. Actually the slot was just a plasitc bag in a small spot along one of the eight lines, arrange by team codes.

Well arranging storage sections by team codes was a little challange, since short time from preparation to the game began. We did it but the real task was ahead. People came almost at the same time with one thought, let the baggages stored asap and then start the game on time. We, a team with 15 people, had to do two things - pack & put. Packing the baggages was relatively easier than putting the baggages to proper locations. Each baggages can be consisted of more than 4 big backpacks, and even "inhandy". That could be the blackholes for me, the "relatively" slim guy. Luckily, there were several muscular volunteers from Custom & Excise in our team!Loading the baggages was just the first half of our mission. Unloading was another, after the participants finished the game. This part can also judge how well we did in the loading period. No thing is perfect in the world, so our job is. Most baggages were placed in right locations but a proportion of them were in wrong order, due to hurry in rushing moments. That caused more time to get the pack back to our tired-and-exhausted "clients". We still satisfied our performance, as the whole mission was completed safely, without any loss. From 9am to 3pm, I felt just 3 hours and got a little sun-burnt (I should put on a cap!).
All is worthwhile. I was just a very little part of it, but others and I really did something.
Where was the competition location? Tai-tong, Yeung Long. One of the final frontiers in Hong Kong, where still have the smell of green. When I looked back to the concrete jungle from the green palace, a question raised - are city development and nature friends or competitors? I do hope they are friends, they live with each other. 這段日子的傳媒報章不時提及香港人是很有善心、同情心，我心竟然感到不安。
藉著彼方的天災來「襯托」港人的情操，會否有點覺得有點.....過份？其實善心和同情心是與生俱來，報章也大肆吹噓一陣，究竟這是傳媒質素有問題，還是我們普遍的人生態度的問題呢？別忘了那些傳媒多數是「市場導向」的，以迎合讀者受眾的口味。
在明報看過梁文道先生的一篇評論《只有同情並不足夠》，一邊看，一邊不斷點頭稱是。他大概說中我心不安的原因，以下是一些節錄：
這篇評論值得我們去深思、去檢討自己對待人和事的態度。不要把憐憫淪為自私的盾牌；謹記不是只有大災害才會帶給人苦難；同情不是一種結果，應該將之再昇華成行動的勇氣。個人的能力固然單薄，但若果每個人都有這能力，相信世界就會好得多。

很多人看見南亞地震及海嘯的慘重災情之後，就發現香港果然是塊福地，既不在地震帶上，也少有海嘯的風險。又有很多人發現印尼亞齊省及斯里蘭卡居然有人為了食 水和麵包，幹起搶掠打劫的事，於是了解到自己的生活幸福，不愁吃穿，實在要感恩一番。這讓我想起曾經有非政府組織帶一批香港中學生去泰國農村考察，目的是 看看全球化對傳統小田農夫生活的影響，結果學生們回來之後的最大感慨竟然是﹕「我有錢買嘢，又有書讀，真係好幸福。我以後一定要努力讀書，珍惜光陰」。這種從他人的苦難身上發現自己優越的情緒，好的一面是重新肯定了自己現有生活的價值﹔但壞起來的話，又何異於有些父母故意帶孩子去看乞丐，然後教訓他們 「嗱，唔努力讀書，第日就會變成咁啦」呢﹖廉價的憐憫只不過是自私的最佳盾牌。
印尼大地震固然是極端可怕的災害，但這世界上其實還有不少其他種類的災害，甚至天天都有災民致死。只是它們是曠日持久的苦難，沒有一場巨大的海嘯那麼具戲劇性 ﹔ 只是它們可能是人為的苦難，反而沒有天災那麼容易令人動情。我們的世界每天都有三萬多兒童因為營養不良和欠缺潔淨食水死亡，還有十億人活在極度窮困的環境之中，他們的處境在很大程度上是人類自己造成，甚至是我們可以出一分力去改變的。但是傳媒固然沒有持續報道和跟進的興趣，我們對於無力防止的自然災害的同 情，也遠比我們可以付諸行動去加以阻止的人為破壞大得多。
全球倫理學的基礎之一，是我們每一個個人的行為都可能會影響到地球另一端陌生人的生命。例如我們的消費行為就不再只是衡量個人消費能力然後購買滿足感這麼簡單了，它們可能還會影響到世界某個角落居民的生活環境。因此香港這一刻對於鄰邦史無前例的同情心，有必要轉化成一種真正具有全球公民意識的道德情感，而這 種道德情感需要知識去理清我們和地球上其他人的關係，需要不斷反省的韌力，還需要行動的勇氣。要做世界公民，光有一時的同情心氾濫是不夠的。
這篇評論值得我們去深思、去檢討自己對待人和事的態度。不要把憐憫淪為自私的盾牌；謹記不是只有大災害才會帶給人苦難；同情不是一種結果，應該將之再昇華成行動的勇氣。個人的能力固然單薄，但若果每個人都有這能力，相信世界就會好得多。
